IN MEMORY

This man was such a friend to our program - his name was Michael Hoch and he was from Minnesota. We met in 2004 when he offered to volunteer and also wanted to adopt a horse. He was battling cancer then but always offered to help ASAP out. He adopted several horses through our program over the years and took great care of each. His cancer came back in 2008 - he relinquished Never Smoother to the program with Heather F. of Minnesota, fearing he would not be able to care for him. I just got word after trying to reach Mike that he passed away April 13, 2009. Blessed be his memory - and let's hope he's riding in heaven today!

This horse was transferred without ASAP knowledge to a home in Iowa. Any way that you can help us recover this mini would be appreciated. He is a miniature horse who was adopted by D. Hile in Wisconsin. He has not disclosed where the horse was transferred to or with whom. We need help through people posting his picture on Iowa bulletin boards for us and posting on Most Wanted. Please help us find him! Our last recourse is to hire an attorney for replevin action but we'd like to avoid this as it is costly. Susan

Financial Update

Financial Update

Friends,

Due to changes beyond our control, we have been experiencing a financial crunch. We depend on adoptions of horses to finance the other horses coming into the program and waiting for homes. For many reasons, our bills are exceeding our income. At the same time, we have more horses than ever being placed into the program and the rate is not slowing down. Without help from the harness racing industry, placing owners, or the public, we are in major financial distress. Please help us if you can - any amount would be appreciated. Mail or Pay Pal. The mailing address is:

ASAP Inc.

De Soto, WI 54624

Thank you ever so much.

Trailer Alert & More...

Just a friendly reminder to those of you coming to pick up adopted horses here at the farm, or anywhere:

* Trailers must be a minimum of 6.5 feet high.

We can no longer allow horses over 15'2" hands to try to squeeze into trailers which are not tall enough. Thanks for understanding!

Most Standardbreds are over 15 hands tall. Also, many, who have been racing, are accustomed to ramps rather than step-up trailers. At the very minimum, a stock trailer or horse trailer should be 6'6" high. If it is not, please do not bring a trailer and do not expect to adopt a horse. This is the insure the safety of the horses traveling. We are only trying to be conscientious and thoughtful and trying to keep horses safe and comfortable during transport.

Also, many people are asking why so many horses are being returned. I think this speaks to life circumstances which arise with adopters that is not the fault of the horse. The majority of horses being returned to the program are being returned because ASAP is a lifetime program, which mandates that when a horse is no longer wanted by a family or they are unable to provide for it, that it come back and another suitable and qualified home is found.

Some people do not fully realize the commitment of keeping a horse and in those cases the horses are usually returned within the first year. Many, if not most, adopters keep their adopted horses for a period of years. Children grow up, leave home, and the horses are no longer being enjoyed. That is the case with at least four of the horses on our site right now. In those cases the horses are returned and another home is located for the horses.

In the most severe cases, a sudden loss of a job, divorce, illness, and death force the return of a horse who once had a "forever" home. Thankfully, ASAP is there to help those adopters during times of crisis and help the horses go to another family that is qualified.

Thank you,

Susan
