American Standardbred Adoption Program

Penguin Beware

STB gelding returning to the program. Current adopter states, "When he arrived here, he was still a couple hundred pounds underweight, lame, dull coat, and very nervous. Now, he is at an appropriate weight, has a shiny coat and bright eye, and is much calmer. He has very nice ground manners. My vet floated his teeth around the first of the year as he was dropping a lot of grain. His feet are trimmed every 6 weeks and are in very good shape; he is not shod because the ground where our barn is doesn't require it and he has very good feet. I have not tried to ride or drive him because I have wanted him to get back into good condition first and then recently, because of my health. His shots and Coggins are all up to date and he is on a daily Strongid-C program supplemented by periodic paste worming. He has not been sick at all since I have had him. He came to me with the information that he had a healed slab fracture of his hock, but the x-rays my vet did showed that he had (not surprisingly for having raced so much) arthritis in both hocks. He is basically sound but I do not know how much work he might be able to do; possibly light driving or riding with a lightweight rider. I have been in touch with his former owner, who very kindly sent me videos of Penguin's birth and of several of his winning races. My husband is putting them on DVD to send back to the former owner and I can send copies back with Penguin in case his new family would like to have them. Of course I will send all of Penguin's health records since I received him and the x-rays." Penguin is located in South Carolina.

Adopters please note that you will be responsible for the HAULING, COGGINS, and INTERSTATE HEALTH CERTIFICATE of any horse you adopt.

Wolfie takes the lead
Miss Josie

STB mare, currently located in Iowa. Bay. Very pretty. Josie is good under saddle, but can use a more experienced rider. Josie is a sweet mare. Please call Susan for more details.

Davy Rocket (10yr)

15.3 HH solid brown (black bay) Standardbred gelding. He is very nice to handle- hauls, ties, picks up feet, good for vet and farrier. No vices. He is a big lover and seeks out attention. He has done well in a herd of 8 here and has ridden well with other horses. We have been riding him here and he moves off the leg well and is about ½ there for neck reining. Has a smooth, comfortable, and fast stepping pace. He does well with trail riding. I bought Dave last December with the intent of eventually adding him into the ASAP program, because his future did not look bright. Davy had a successful race career, and won $175,000.00 in 161 races in New York State and Canada. He does have an ankle that is arthritic and has been pin fired and injected in his racing years. He is sound for easy riding but will go a little off on that leg at a fast pace if ridden hard. If you need a pasture mate that can double as a husband horse or a guest horse for some occasional rides, Dave is the steed for you. $350.00 adoption fee.

Sunny Forecast (18yr)

Sound Standardbred mare. Has been a wonderful friend, mommy, and is well trained to drive. Unless adopted in Michigan, she will come to Wisconsin the first week of June. If interested contact Susan at asapinc@mwt.net.
Bad Boy Adam
STB gelding. Current owner states, "Adam has bowed tendons and did not heal well enough to resume racing.  As far as I know, he would be fine for a riding horse.  He had trained in 2:25 and then picked at his bandages, which caused a couple of bumps.  At that point, Marshall stopped training. He had found a new job, and my husband and I decided it was time to find Adam a nice home. Adam is brown, on the small side, and a graceful mover.  If a new owner is interested, I have a DVD of him winning two races back in August.  On the last race, you can tell his legs were bothering him as he crossed the finish line."
Laramie (5yr)

Purebred Holsteiner gelding, 15'3 hands tall. Owner states, "He is well started under saddle and over fences. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to ride him this summer, so he is out of shape and hasn't been ridden at all in at least a month. Laramie is a fattie!  He is a very easy keeper, and gets only about 2 cups of grain at each feeding. In order to control his weight, I keep him in a paddock so I can monitor his food. Laramie has fantastic " Landgraf " breeding on both sides of his pedigree. This bloodline is very sought after and is found in many successful international jumpers!  Although he is not registered, both of his parents were imported from Germany and I do have a copy of both sides of his pedigree. I raised Laramie from a yearling.  He has always been very sound and healthy, and can live outside easily. When he was 3, I had some standard x-rays taken and found that he had OCD's in both hocks. I had those removed surgically, and everything went great. He has some white hairs at the back of both of his hocks from the bandages.  He never had any problems before, during or after the surgery. Laramie is very HANDSOME!  He loads, lunges and clips, although I never clip him while he is cross tied. I always hold my young horses by a lead rope when clipping or standing for the farrier.  Laramie has spent most of his life on my property, so he has NO show or trail experience. He might be shy at first when dealing with strangers. I just haven't had time to take him out and about. Laramie is sensitive to ride. He can be very energetic to ride, and can get excited over the jumps. He is definitely more of a " jumper " type than a " hunter " type. He might make a nice lower level event or dressage horse as well - but, I haven't had the time to try it. He does natural flying lead changes when turned loose. I had started him doing some flying changes under saddle last year and he caught on very quickly. But, he hasn't practiced them in awhile." Please call for more details.
Skittles

This little gelding is the offspring of Grey Van Kandy, who is a mare placed in our program several years ago. Skittles was an "oops, I didn't know she was even bred" foal........so he has mainly been just a pasture pal to Strawberry Jacki for the past two years. He is sweet and very friendly, espeically towards women. He does run from men who are "all business".....ready for saddle training - a nicely-built small horse for a kid who wants to someday compete! Call 608-689-2399 or asapinc@mwt.net.
Rollin Jessie (6yr)

Jessie (l.) and Niatross (r.)
Standardbred mare. Jessie is a tall dark bay mare - over 16 hands - stocky build. Loads and trailers well - curious and gentle - harness trained - not yet retrained to saddle At ASAP farm. Call 608-689-2399 or asapinc@mwt.net for details
Fox Valley Equinox

STB gelding. now completely retrained to saddle.  Spooked a little the first three days on trails but never bucked, reared, or balked.  Scared to death of steers first few days - desensitized to cattle after two weeks! He is a little black bay with a Roman nose! He made $20,000 and was a pacer. Foaling Date: 01/23/2000. Sire: INCREDIBLE FINALE, Dam: LOAFSTER. Fox Valley Equinox is now trained to ride and has a beautiful running walk!

Idle While Niatross (16yr)

15'2 hands - light bay. Niatross was raced years ago, but has been mainly a brood mare for the past ten years. She loves people after she gets to know them. She is a sucker for neck rubs! She can be dominant with other horses but not mean. She is harness trained but not yet trained to saddle.

Lilly Long (3yr)

Beautiful STB filly. Currently standing in Michigan. Contact Susan at asapinc@mwt.net for more details. UPDATE FROM FOSTER FAMILY (3/07): Lilly has been trail ridden! She's coming along nicely.
Bu Light Special (5yr)
STB gelding. Tall. Trotter.
Louis (7yr)

Thoroughbred gelding. Bay. 16.1 hands tall. He has been off the track now for about two and a half years, if not more. He is in good physical condition except for his fetlocks, which have had surgery and made him lame. His teeth, feet, vaccinations, and worming are all up to date. Louie is a horse looking for a good home. He can do light riding, he loads, ties, bathes, clips, and has good ground manners.
Harley (8yr)

Morgan gelding. Current owner states, "Harley, the gelding, does chew on wood when he's bored. The only time that happens is when the biting bugs force him into the barn all day during the summer. He isn't a cribber that grabs onto the wood to suck wind, and he doesn't go looking for wood this time of year when he prefers to be outside. I started Harley under saddle when he was 5 years old, but has only been ridden with a halter. I had 45 minutes of saddle time on his back before taking him to the forest horse trails. It was the first time in his life he'd been outside a pasture but he handled going through water for the first time like a pro, even when in the lead. Even spooky forest things like little critters in rustling leaves only startled him but nothing spooked him. He's got a heart of gold and will be a partner with his rider if treated kindly." Please call for more details.
Jetta (12yr)

Shetland pony cross. Current owner states, "Jetta, the pony mare is hard to catch. It was my plan to fix that, but just after I bought her as a companion for Harley, my chronic pain worsened and the plans I had to work with her were reluctantly scrapped. She, like Harley, has a beautiful, kind eye and would probably give her soul for someone who'd treat her right. If I remember right, the previous owner said she was broke to ride, but I think too that kids who rode her may have been rough on her mouth." Please call for more details.
Sarajevo (6yr)

Current adopter states, "She has just received her vaccinations and has a current coggins as of today.  We are willing to foster her until she finds a home." Please call for more details as far as riding history on this beauty.

Four Curly Mares
These horses are located in Missouri. Please call for more details. For pics please go to http://www.hobbyfarmssheep.com/Bazy.html.

Owner states, "Wing (half STB, half Curly) is magnificent. I turned down an offer of $3000t. The second is Sweet, a smooth (non-curly) mare out of an impeccably-bred registered Arabian mare and by our Curly stallion. Both of these mares are four years old (or in Wing's case, coming four), sound, very people-oriented and gentle.

The third would need a fairly special home. Xena lost her eye as a weanling (it's been surgically removed and sewn over) and she developed serious ulcers while boarding at the vet's after her surgery. For two years she had colic at least every 10 days, serious enough to need Banamine. We eventually figured out that if she stayed in the pasture with the other horses and didn't eat a bunch of concentrates, she doesn't colic. But she would need to go to someone who would maintain her on pasture (and in the winter, hay) as much as possible. She's very sweet and trusting and I'm pretty sure she could be ridden as she lost her eye so early in life that she's compensated. She would probably be breedable if kept on pasture but that would remain to be seen.

The fourth is Bazy, Xena's mom, a 17 year old registered Curly range mare. A former friend from Connecticut adopted her from an Arizona feedlot and had her sent here five years ago. I have the papers and they are signed and open. She's an outstanding producer and in fact, one of her sons, Humvee, is (or was) a leading endurance horse. Bazy is friendly as in nickering to us and occasionally letting us scratch her withers but apart from that, she's untouchable. She has perfect hooves--they self-trim at ideal angles, it's amazing--and she readily eats pelleted wormer, because we've only gotten a halter on her once in almost five years."

Heifetz Hanover (10yr)
Pacing Stallion - Record of 1:51 and earnings of $366,129.  Owner states, "Last raced on 7/12/06 and had some OCD's removed from his front left knee is getting around quite well and could even possibly race again but we did not want to put him through it.  He has been swam a lot also.  We already have one stallion that we are going to breed and don't really have room for him - he is about 15.2 hands.  Very pleasant to be around - not studish at all.  Will sign over USTA registration with him.  He is a dark bay color." Located in western NY.
Michael Pandon (6yr)
Pacing Gelding - Record of 1:53.4 and earnings of $80,285.  Owner states, "Last raced on 2/16/07 and broke his coffin bone.  Needs 4-6 Months stall rest and then rehabilitation and could go back to racing or he is also already broke to ride.  Large horse and very pleasant to be around.  He is a medium bay color.  Will give his USTA registration also, we only ask that if you do plan on racing him that you be sure to give him proper healing time - we would hate to see him rushed back and then break it again and we hear that he had to be put down or something." Located in western NY.
Liberty
More information to come. Please see her pics at: http://www.evergreenequines.us/id11.html

Note: These two horses will stay with owners until adopted. Hotshot and Streaky have been together for 20 years and are very close so a priority is keeping them together.

Streaky (23yr)
Thoroughbred.  16.2HH. Owner states, "Has calmed down considerably since we (my mom and I) got him at the age of 4.  Pretty good with kids, however, still a thoroughbred and capable of “kicking up his heals” every once in a while (beautiful gaits).  He had an injury on his back foot and cast himself a few times.  Last year his leg swelled up and didn't come down in size.  The vet said that it probably does not drain properly anymore so he will always be prone to casting in a stall.  The vet recommended only keeping him in a field with a lean-to, instead of a stall."

Hotshot (27yr)
Anglo-Arab. 16HH.  Owner states, "We have had him since he was 4.  He has been diagnosed with heaves.  He does well on a field with little sand and dust.  Summer is usually hardest on him; I think he is developing allergies on top of the heaves.  Hotshot is a high energy horse who loves people."

Big Conquest (6yr)
Standardbredhorse that was a very successful racehorse.  He gets along very well with other horses.  He has been turned out with yearrlings, broodmares and other horses. Conquest is solid bay in color and approximately 15.3 hands. Located in IL. He is now being checked for back problems.
No More Compromise (3yr)

STB gelding from Florida to Illinois to ASAP! UPDATE (2/10): This sweet little guy is from Florida! Actually he started out in Illinois and cost $10,000 as a yearling. His hopeful and very compassionate owner purchased him and was very hopeful for his future, understandably. Despite having no injuries, Compromise was just not making the speed. He traveled from Illinois to Florida and then Florida to the East Coast to attempt to race well. It just wasn't going to happen. Compromise ended up back in Florida where his owner phoned ASAP asking for help in finding him a home. We were able to arrange to get him shipped to Illinois and picked up by my husband at the same time as Hollywood Sam and R Colelateral and R Little Rich Boy. He had a lot to learn about being in a herd and being in the country. Puddles, dogs, cats, cows in the distance... wow - a lot for a young boy to take in! He is beautiful but needs to put on weight and I have a blanket on him to keep him warm right now. I brought him up to the barn for a few days when a back leg was sore for some reason and he just lays his head on my shoulder and cuddles. Then I notice that he also likes to play kissy kissy and will smush his lips into yours! He does kick his stall wall when frustrated. He also likes to be boss with other horses and he and Hollywood Sam are very bonded since they trailered together (yes that DOES happen). He has tons of potential as a great pet and riding companion and is still so young!!! Hesitant to load in trailer but hauls well once inside. Kicks stall walls if he is kept in - likes to be turned out. Gets along well with other horses in herd. Does not spook at much of anything at any time. Likes to cuddle

Popeye (yearling)

This is a lovely paint filly, will be a yearling in 2007, beautifully marked and sweet to handle. Current owner states, "She's more of a western / pleasure type of horse with a substantial body and build. She is very quiet and loves attention. We've cross tied her, blanketed her, loaded her, and vacuumed her and she's quiet as can be. The reason I'd like to donate her is that she has a significant toe-in from the pastern down in both fronts legs, more so on the left leg. When she is freshly trimmed, you can't really see it at all ! But, this is something that she will have for the rest of her life, so I don't want to use her for breeding, jumping or serious showing. Other than regular trimmings, she does not require anything special. She is a very easy keeper, quiet and fun to have around. She should mature to 15'3 or so ; and, with her big body, should be a very flashy and special girl! She is up to date on shots, worming, trims, and Coggins." Sue states, "Wow what a sweet filly. Has a rocking H freeze branded on hip - super calm, super gentle, super loving.  Too bad we have to wait a year to ride her - temperament-wise she is ready now!"
Fanny
Current owner states, "Fanny is a well mannered lady, but she would just as soon be eating as bothering with visitors, where Comet would rather be by people."
Comet
Current owner states, "Comet is an easy going baby, my biggest complaint is that since Rhonda started feeding him treats he will nip at your clothing if you have nothing to give him but a pet, yes he is easy to halter, easy to lead and is gelded. He is much more "social" than Fanny. "
Legacy Lady (26yr)
ST mare. 17.1hh. Current owner states, "She is tattooed but it is unreadable and we don't know what her racing name is, we call her Leah. We've had her 6yrs and she is a fantastic horse. She is a semi-retired school master having shown 1st level dressage and schooled up to 2nd level. She has helped teach me how to be a dressage rider. In her youth she was an awesome jumper and incredible hunter pace mount, never spooking and jumping whatever you put in front of her. We only retired her form jumping last year as a precaution rather then a necessity, she'd still jump if you let her! She has a very large build, she has often been mistaken for a warmblood and a cleveland bay. She battled with a hoof infection this past Oct and we almost lost her but in her true nature she pulled herself through and is now 100% sound again and acting 10yrs old!" You may see pictures of Leah at

Gator Chase (7yr)

Standardbred gelding from Wisconsin. Trained to race - nice and easy going, healthy and nice to handle. UPDATE (11/2/06): Our best guess is that Gator is about 15h...maybe 15-1h. He is not real big bodied, he's more refined. It was getting dark by the time we got to him, but he came out of the pasture, away from his friends, past all the scary stuff just fine. We had yapping dogs (farrier had 5 little rat terriers in her car), clanking metal (my husband was loading scrap to take to the salvage yard today) various howling, whining and barking from our dogs, cats running underfoot and people walking around in the dark on the crunchy leaves. All kinds of spooky stuff going on, and he was great, he did see everything, but he just tensed up, didn't jump or attempt to bolt, and it just took a calm word or touch to reassure him. She was trimming him by car headlights, so just got the fronts, but he was awesome. His toes were quite long, and he had a lot of dead sole, so it took a fair amount of time and with all that was going on, he stood perfectly. My friend, the farrier is not a big fan of Standardbreds, but she thinks he's kind of cute, nice head. I also with all due respect call her a "conformation geek" and she had nothing negative to say about him, thought he was put together nicely. (UPDATE (12/12): I LOVE THIS HORSE! He is fine-boned and there is nothing especially striking about him, yet he has a head and an eye like Janimal - small and those dark eyes set wide apart just pull at your heart strings. With Uncle Skippy and My Ciao Baby in their new homes, it gave me more time to spend with Gator. He is submissive in a herd. He loves people and treats. He is very quiet when being led and very compliant. He does not shy or balk about going in and out through narrow openings or doorways. He is well-behaved in a stall. He does not chew wood. I have put equipment on him and he is very quiet for tacking. I have not yet had a bridle on him but will do some ground driving this weekend. He loves attention and seems to be a more responsive horse to affection and handling. He would spend all day just "hanging" with someone if given the opportunity! Gator Chaser needs to be trained to ride. Is timid in the beginning til he knows someone but is not easily spooked when he is being handled. Curious and cute. $375. Loves to explore his surroundings on a lead line. Easy to bathe, clip, load and haul. In the past he has been difficult to catch when turned out but now is eager to be handled, brushed, loved and will ground tie for this and does not need to be chased. Scared to death of the sled that carried his grain down to him when the deep snow was abundant, but over time desensitized to it. Gator is the leader of the boys in the herd - gets what he wants without a fight - strong body language says it all. UPDATE (4/25): Now in saddle training.

Snow Flurry (3yr)
Silver. STB mare in Michigan near Detroit. She is sound
She has an issue with approaching her in her stall at feeding time and sometimes will kick out. She needs someone who will teach her respect during times when she wants to be dominant. She is trained to harness but I don't believe she has been ridden. Please call for more details.
Missile Mike

STB gelding located in IL. This guy is learning leg cues and has been going on rides. He is a pleasant horse to be around. Please call ASAP for more details. UPDATE (2/10): Sue states, "Missile Mike - 8 years old Stallion until last year. Probably only light riding from racing - dominant - adoption fee negotiable."
Lester (approx. 20 yr)

Quarter Horse gelding. "He is sound, very rideable, and needs no shoes or medications. He is a sweet horse with a lot of spunk. He has excellent ground manners, but is shy around new people and new situations. In my year of riding him, he has never spooked, bucked, bolted or reared. His only issue is that once he starts to go fast, he tends to go really fast. He can be difficult to stop, but I have never felt that I was in danger on him." Please call for more details. Located in Muskego, WI. (UPDATE 12/12): He is now at the ASAP farm. He is thin but hasn't taken his head out of the hay feeder since he arrived and is gaining weight. He is head shy and cautious with strangers, but once he has a lead rope on a child can lead him with no problems. We will try riding him this weekend.

JD

JD was picked up by an ASAP foster family. He is recovering from extreme weight loss. Please call if you can help JD. UPDATE (12/2): A lot of people are asking about JD. Right now Dynasplint's Jana Caldwell is willing to donate all of her time and equipment to JD to help him with his contracture. We only need to fund his travel to Texas instead of Kentucky at this point. We are asking for donations and have already received $100 from a caring individual in Wisconsin. The cost of his transport is $750.  We ask for your support!  Special thanks to Lori in Iowa for all of her dedication and hard work for JD! UPDATE (12/5): For all JD knew, it could have been a truck and trailer pulling up to take him to the slaughter plant. He obediently jumped right in. He has a fighting spirit and a will to survive. Let's all say a prayer for JD as he travels to Texas for his last hope to correct that contracture- we pray it was the right decision but we want to give Dynasplint Systems and Jana Caldwell a huge round of applause and sincere appreciation for donating their equipment, board, and care of JD in order to try to correct the contracture in his leg. We need everyone's positive thoughts for JD right now - and we need to also thank Lori for all she has done to help JD recover from his horrible experiences from past care or lack thereof. UPDATE (1/9/07): Jana from Dynasplint says, "JD is doing fine. I have gotten a lot of the swelling out of his cannon area and he is tolerating the splint very well. He is actually bearing some weight on his toe when he walks now. I am soaking his leg in a large rubbermaid trash can with runner's relief. He doesn't like that too much. It takes at least 3 of us to get it done, but is helps him. I will continue to update you as we make progress."
Wildfire (3yr)

Filly. Pony. 8.3HH. White with brown speckles. Wildfire is halter broke and has a nice trot. She would be a great little cart pony. Current owner states, "She has a lovely, animated trot - a flashy pony once rid of her winter coat - she is white with brown "Arabian speckles" and large expressive eyes. Wildfire was WILD when she came and is wary of strangers but surprised me by bumping me lightly with her nose the other day - asking for a treat - so she is learning to trust despite not getting a lot of attention. She has a condition which the vet couldn't diagnose with the equipment he has. We are guessing it might be something like cleft palate in humans. We considered taking her to Madison to have her scoped to confirm or deny that - but since she is in good health and thriving - decided not to put her through the stress. She does best on dry feed - such as hay - and is an "easy keeper" as long as she has plenty of fresh water and some hay. She can eat grass, though it causes green discharge to run from her nose and in turn colors her coat green anywhere she touches herself with her muzzle. When she is fed hay that doesn't happen. Her feet are good and her attitude is curious and alert. She doesn't bully other animals. It is a shame that a young animal with her "weather vane horse" trot should spend her days loafing around the pasture. It would be wonderful if there was someone out there - perhaps someone who loves horses but is no longer able to ride or interested in riding, who has the experience and the time to teach this little lady to pull a small cart. As frightened as she was when she came flying out of the trailer on the first day she was here, and as horrified as she was about the process of washing off all the layers of mud, dirt and manure that first couple of days (not a big fan of bathing) she has never kicked or bitten. A little hay, a lot of fresh clean water to wash it down, some minerals and routine health care have kept her healthy here. I don't foresee her condition getting worse - she has seemed to thrive on the diet she is eating - but I couldn't guarantee that she would never have a problem." Please call for more details on Wildfire.
Thunderjam

"TJ." Gelding. Please call for more details. He is rideable and is in Bangor area of Wisconsin. Can be barn sour as his only vice.
Grey Ghost (22yr)
Gelding foaled on April 18, 1984. His registration number is 2234847. Markings: disconnected star, strip, and snip. Right fore sock. Stocking on hind legs. No other markings. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate the Certificate of Registration. Current owner states, " When my children were little we road him as a trail horse in Riverwoods Illinois. He is now boarded at Timmerman's in Mchenry, Illinois."
Paint Gelding - Show prospect - young and sound.
Pinedon (18yr)

This beautiful 18 year old Standardbred mare is a bay with white blaze. She is calm and well mannered on the ground. She is not herd bound. She is not spooky. She is well mannered in a stall and ties well. She is quiet for grooming and accustomed to llamas, dogs, pigs, and other horses. She raced, then was a brood mare and was donated by a family out East. She had been stabled with Dr. Anna Ruman, a veterinarian in Illinois who also works with the Dept. of Agriculture. She was described by Anna's husband as a nice big mare, sound, and even-tempered. When we brought her back to ASAP in March, we knew she was ready for the saddle. We saddled her and before a half hour was over she was being ridden with only a halter and two lead ropes. She went over cavalettis and was ridden at the walk and a little at the trot. She then was ridden by a 13 year old girl around the farm and we can see that this mare is going to be a fantastic family horse for someone. She is up to date on shots and worming. Please call 608-689-2399 or email Susan at asapinc@mwt.net to adopt her. UPDATE (5/22): May 20 found Pinedon with a group of day campers and Susan's children.  Pinedon is so absolutely striking that she catches the eye of many who visit ASAP.  Shiny coat, healthy glow, and great spirit for a mare of 18. It was time to ride her again on this recent Saturday.  She was held by the halter while Amy mounted, bareback.  As expected, no response.  She was ridden with a halter and two leadropes.  She is very attached to a gelding right now, but being separated from him didn't seem to annoy her as much as it did two weeks ago.  She took all the activity and business with curiosity and at the same time a level head.  Pinedon is ready to do much more with the right adoptive family. (UPDATE 2/10): Pinedon is wonderful beautiful sweet and still full of energy. She is in Menomonee area of Wisconsin and is $350.
Kung Fu Guru (4yr)

STB gelding - very tall at over 16 hands - curious and playful... not yet retrained to ride.  In Quad Cities area. UPDATE (7/5): He is just gorgeous! I do have some cover on the ribs now and hips are filling in. Feet almost to normal. We have worked him on a line and round pen. Had a saddle on him but not ready for weight yet. Still real pushy on the ground but Megan is working with him on it. On his ankle -- we are seeing some lameness on it. Last week he wouldn't come in to stall at night then wouldn't catch so spent way to much time on it so doing our best for him to come in and rest. I think whomever may want to look at him should xray or ultra sound it. He will be a very nice horse but at his level an experienced previous owner or trainer because he will walk right over you -- and he can." Please call for more details on this horse in training. UPDATE (1/7/07): He has really come around and matured this fall. Not pushy on the ground or aggressive as he once was. Passive while being groomed, inquisitive to pocket contents, following all commands. We lunged him under saddle and in 3 days had a rider on him. Nothing fancy and no collection but a good boy all around. I guess he just needed time to grow up a bit and relax. Problem is he is still massive and filling out. How do you trail ride a 17.3 horse, ducking under branches won't always work. Do you pack a horn ladder? But in reall good shape. Not showing any lameness on fronts but could that change with activity?
Charlie (7yr)

Breeding stock paint.  He is friendly and likes attention.  Current owner states, "He suffered an injury as a 2 year old during training where he had a sacral subluxation which left him with nerve damage in his hind legs.  He can run and play just fine with the other horses and seems to have found a way to do pretty well, however the vet said he will never be safe to ride due to his injury.  So, he has mostly been a pasture pet for the past several years.  In years past he is usually good for the vet and farrier and has okay ground manners.  Although sometimes he needs a little refresher.  This spring he was not so good for the vet and I am not quite sure why, because he usually always is.  So, he is a little more difficult to find a home for.  Mostly good as just a pasture pet or companion.  Needs someone with experience with horses because he can be naughty sometimes.  Most of the time he is very friendly and loves to be petted and brushed, and like I said most of the time is good for vet and farrier.  This is the first time I have had trouble with him in years.  He is also good about worming."

Echo (21yr)

Bay Arabian gelding, 14hh, he was never registered by his previous owner but he came from Burton's and is a grandson of Aladinn. Current owner states, "He is broke to ride but can be spooky. Gorgeous movement! No health or soundness issues. Stands about 14 hands. Real sweetheart, loves people and will also come running in from the field when called, gets along well with other horses and has been with the mare above ever since he was born. He is very responsive on the ground, backs up really nice, will walk and trot by your side." Please call ASAP for more details.

Depth Charge (19yr)
STB gelding. Sire:  Outstanding, Dam:  Helen of Highland. Bay - originally from Michigan - raced until late 90's. Has been in adoptive home since 1999 - is well trained to ride. Depth Charge hates cattle and should be in a home without cattle.  He has not seen another horse since 1999.  Is located in Westby, WI.  Contact ASAP for more.
Cheyenne (6yr)

QH mare. 15 hands. Nice and quiet. Halter broke, used to farriers, handling, but has never been trained to ride. UPDATE FROM FOSTER FAMILY (8/14): Cheyenne is now at our (Mark and Denise Stuber north of Menomonie, WI) farm. She does halter up fine and will allow her feet to be trimmed. Beyond this, Cheyenne has very little understanding of obedience. She has had a couple natural horsemanship ground work training sessions and is responding very quickly and positively. She has a big, almost foundation quarter horse look, deep in the chest and wide in the neck. She is a registered breeding stock paint. UPDATE (9/23): We saddled Cheyenne for the first time. She took the saddle well with no resistance. We also explored some new areas on the farm and spooky objects. She remained fairly calm and curious through it all. We will do more groundwork with the saddle on before we try mount. When we picked her up Cheyenne had a badly split left front hoof (a very deep, full length toe crack). This has grown out about half way and is not causing her any problems. UPDATE (10/19): We rode Cheyenne again today. This was her second time being mounted and her first time in the arena. We didn't do anything fast but she moved out at a walk, took direction and stopped on command. She is a very calm and patient horse. Even when she was a bit confused she wasn't at all panicky and was quite comfortable to ride. We will continue to work with her. At this point she is safe to mount and ready for serious training if someone is interested.
Anxious Larry (14yr)

STB gelding. Placed with ASAP through Arlene Nystrom in 1997. CHESTNUT gelding. Broke coffin bone in 1997 - ended racing career - bar shoe and stall rested until 1998.  Now sound. He is a breathtaking horse with a beautiful head.  He is a big baby.  He was with adoptive family for 8 years and is now being returned to the program as they have too many horses.  Larry is in foster care in Westby WI  Contact ASAP fore more information. UPDATE (11/2): Anxious Larry has been with us now in Northern Minnesota since April. He had not been ridden when we got him for nearly 8 years. We have been riding Larry. He is a little unsure of what you want him to do but learning quickly. He is not a nervous horse. He is doing nicely under saddle at a walk. He is afraid of trees and other “scary things” right now but we are working on that. We are getting his confidence up in his riding skills again and will begin to work on more desensitizing. Larry is dominant in our herd of 4 horses. He walks right up to people and has never kicked or acted aggressive to people. He is a very pretty horse. He is an easy keeper. He is located in Northern Minnesota.
Last Call (5yr)

Appendix Quarter Horse gelding. Chestnut. 16.3 HH. His nickname is Halo, and he is currently in Virginia. Sound. Please call ASAP for more details on this beauty. Halo is trained in western style. Current owner states, "He was learning so quick earlier in his training that he was voice command trained.  I have a new trainer working with him to keep him from becoming wild or restless, but I do not know where he skills stand right now.  He will need some work, but you will definitely not be starting from scratch." UPDATE FROM FOSTER FAMILY (12/24): Last Call (aka, Halo) is a really nice horse. He's tall, he's gorgeous, he is affectionate, and has good ground manners. He is green, but with a patient trainer would make a truly awesome hunter or eventer. He has not be ridden much, especially since the weather turned, so will need an experienced rider to start. He does seem to be a very sensible horse and would probably succeed at any discipline with the proper training. We are fostering him for ASAP at our farm in Warrenton and would really love to find the ideal home in the near future (since we are currently at 8 horses with 7 stalls!). UPDATE FROM FOSTER FAMILY (1/4): Halo is a gorgeous guy, the pictures don't do him justice! He has good ground manners and is affectionate. He's shod on the front only and his hooves look good and healthy. Although his donor said he was trained Western, the girl who occasionally rode him used her dressage saddle and my daughter rode him in a jumping saddle. He seems to have a lot of sense, but as a youngster who has been *very* lightly ridden, he is definitely green and a bit hot as well. His donor did mention that he free jumped a 4' fence (there was blasting occuring nearby and he was terrified!). Halo appears to have a lot of potential and with his build, would likely make an excellent event horse. Since he has never been raced and is completely sound, he should dowell with a patient, experienced rider who can take him where he should be.
Too Good To Be True (21yr)
STB stallion. Pacer. Current owner is in a nursing home and wishes for this stallion to have a good home. Owner's friend states, "He has never been ridden nor was he ever retrained to pleasure driving. A broken foot ended his racing career. He doesn't have any sign of a limp that I've ever noticed however. He has been used solely for breeding the last many years. He is approved to stand in Illinois. No one would mind if he went to someone who wants to breed him. He has never failed to breed a mare. He is a bay, around 16 hands. He is 21 and in excellent health. He has excellent ground manners and is easy to handle. He was still breeding as of last  year(2004). He is currently at a friend's boarding facility. I own a 9 year old son of his who is my pleasure riding/driving horse and I along with the owner of the boarding facility are trying everything we can to find him a home.  We feel he would be a great cross for producing sport horses. There is also a 1/2 brother to my horse who is out of a thoroughbred mare and he is big and beautiful. We don't want to see this horse slaughtered because his owner is in a nursing home. We would like to see him placed somewhere where he could possibly still breed, but then live out his life in a good place. Or a retirement home now for him to go to."

Angel (2yr)

STB filly (pictured on the left). Bay. Foster family states, "Angel is 2 and has had some training. She is sound and very loving. She is very friendly. She follows us around the pasture nuzzles her head on us and is just a doll." Please call the ASAP office for more details.

TJ'S Miss Double Mac (4yr)

STB mare. Bay. This mare is big, sound, and very friendly. She was raced but wasn't fast enough to continue. Located in KY. Please call ASAP for more details. UDATE (8/3): This mare is all sass at this point - she is beautiful and sleek - a bay standing around 15'2 hands - but she is not acclimated to country life yet and is not used to being herded - she kicks and squeals so are getting her used to the process slowly.  She is flashy and for an experienced person her potential is unlimited. UPDATE (8/26): This little missy has a bit of a hormone problem.  She is in perpetual heat, or acts like it.  The trainer told us she needed to be on regimate when she was in training and we may see a need for that, or even spaying her in the future, to help her regulate her cycles.  She will wheel and turn butt at us when we approach her in the paddock, but will never kick (so far).  She loves attention and affection - I just feel as though she cannot help her moods or her personality right now due to her hormone imbalance.  We are going to try to help her as much as we are financially able to do so.  We know that regimate is not cheap......any ideas? UPDATE (9/23): Since coming to the ASAP farm Miss Mak (as Susan calls her) has settled down considerably. Initially she was trying to nip at people as they petted her, and would even turn her rear at people, winking away. She appeared to be in a never-ending heat cycle. We decided to turn her out with mares and geldings and see if this helped her heat cycles or made them worse. The first few days she was turned out she squirted and winked, squirted and winked. She did not become aggressive with other horses, but was more aloof towards people. When approached, she would turn her butt at people as if she may kick, which made people uneasy. Since that time, Miss Mak has settled down. She is no longer in a never-ending heat. She approaches the gate to greet people eagerly. She seems interested in being with people, and will stand for a long time to be hugged and caressed. I think with time this beautiful mare will be a great pet. The trainer did comment that while she was in training for racing they were giving her Regi-mate (sp?)... I do not personally see a need for it while she is on turnout here.
Zeus (4yr)

Thoroughbred gelding. One of two horses that were rescued by a woman in Minnesota. She says this about Zeus, "He is sound for pleasure riding only. He is young, but not spooky at all and fairly well broke. Zeus actually has a crooked hind leg, which causes him to bear weight funny. When he was in training, both of his hocks filled with fluid and he did this funny skipping thing. At the moment his legs look really good as he has been in the pasture since July." UPDATE (10/15): I had the vet out and he examined Zeus. Here is his assessment.  He at one time was either born with, or later broke his right rear hock.  He suspects it was broken.  It is healed now.  I told him he runs jumps bucks etc . But it is a worry about him falling at any gait. A friend is here at the farm who rides and he thought about getting up on him bareback but he is just too tall.  Update from foster family (1/4/06): "He is such a cutie. Very tall, at least 17.2 (a BIG boy) and quite an exceptional horse. He is a beautiful mover. He has been ridden and he did fine, pretty green but not nutsy under saddle. However, we stopped riding him because of the way he carries his hock when under saddle. His left hock begins to bow out, quite odd looking, and looks like it is about to collapse." Update (3/20/06): Zeus continues to gain weight and do well in his current foster situation. Although he has never been at the ASAP farm, what Mary has done with Zeus is commendable. He is still in Minnesota and gets around well and looks healthy. He is waiting for the right companion home as a pasture pal - there is a possibility he could be a light riding horse but vet recommendation is necessary to determine this. Special thanks to Emily his placing owner who has been following his progress as well as to Mary S. in Hampton Minnesota for her dedication and hard work with Zeus.
Brandy

Current owner states, "Brandy's lameness is really only apparent when the ground is frozen. the vet out to look at her and she has some arthritis above her hooves in the front. On days where it is rough out, her lameness if definitely apparent but on days where there is snow to walk on or the ground is not frozen, then she is fine. For those reasons, we think shoes and pads might just be the answer for the cold months. The vet said the rest of her joints are all in really good shape so this seems like something that can be corrected or worked with. I also have her on Cortaflex too which helps. It is something that will need to be addressed but it is no way makes her useless. She just has days where she is sore. The vet did not say to restrict her action or anything like that. Hope that is a better explanation. I also have the write up the vet did 2 weeks ago for anyone who wants it." UPDATE (5/22): Brandy continues to thrive with the day campers who come to the ASAP farm.  She is walking better than ever now, without shoes.  She is aided by a wonderful farrier who believes in natural hoof trimming and has helped her to the point where she no longer needs shoes.  She is happy and the pinned ears and open mouth have all but disappeared.  We are proud to say Brandy is very happy at ASAP but the right person could win her over - come and see if you are the one!  Brandy is being ridden on a regular basis with a hackamore and goes both bareback and under Western saddle.  She has never offered to buck, rear, or do anything and is a perfect riding horse.
Arne (8yr)

Update (10/12): When Arne's little buddy, Bennie, opened the first card with a note from and photo of Arne, he kissed it and carried around all day! Update (10/4): Arne has a buddy! Arne wants to joyously report that: " A four year old boy from California has committed to helping me by sponsoring me for the next six months. We are anxious to start communicating with each other through pictures and letters. $30 a month will pay for a half a bale of good hay for me to eat.....I am so grateful that this boy cared so much for me that he picked me to love and care for! Look for updates in the next couple of weeks as we share pictures and letters with all of you too!" Loved, Arne. Bay gelding - won $50,000 as a pacer - retired in 2000. Arne is an UNBELIEVABLY HANDSOME 17 hands high. His left hind leg has a calcified and enlarged hock and though he is trained to saddle, he's mainly a companion horse. Sweet as sugar! Arne is just a big sweet TEDDY BEAR!
Bob Cook (8yr)

STB gelding - bay. Bob will go STRAIGHT TO YOUR HEART once you meet this GENTLEMAN. He loves people--especially children! UPDATE (6/02):. Bob Cook - foaled in 1995 at Cottonwood Farms in Big Rock, IL. Sire: Silky Stallone out of No Nukes. Dam: Racy Kathy out of Tarport Kathy. Last race was at Maywood Park on January 12, 2001. He made $118,917 from 85 races. Unfortunately, Bob Cook did not leave his racing career in sound condition. He is currently in need of bute daily for a front leg in order for him to even use it to walk. He is a BIG TALL gelding with a BIG heart to match. He needs you to become his new adopter and help him recover. ASAP cannot afford to give Bob Cook all he needs for rehabilitation. We are offering him at NO CHARGE for adoption fee, but we are asking that his hauling fee be reimbursed to the shipper. Please contact ASAP. UPDATE (6/22): Now at the ASAP farm!
Precious KC

to take a "virtual" walk with Precious

Precious can walk, trot, and canter when she gets the gumption. She is easy to be around on the ground, but look out at graining time!!! The report was that she has stifle problems, and has had them for a year, since she last raced. With Weight Gainer on her feed and a gradual increase in consumption of all good hay and grain, she is gaining weight although she was very underweight when she first arrived. She needs a loving family to foster her - or a place to live out her days as a companion horse. This horse earned $90,000 - we owe her our honor!! ASAP farm. UPDATE (7/1): If you could only see Precious today, and compare it with the picture of her when she first arrived at the ASAP farm! Compared with what she was, she is a round butterball now, and has quite the attitude! When approached she cops an "attitude" and despite a little "hitch in her git'along", she can trot and canter with the best of horses! She and Haiku are now an "item" and Haiku has forsaken Brittany, my husband's roping horse, for Precious. Precious is still waiting for a home as a companion horse. She no longer need thyroid medication and is on a diet of complete feed pellets, Nutrena mixed with cracked corn, and all-you-can-eat hay.
