American Standardbred Adoption Program

These horses have given people so much, and they still have so much to offer! Despite all their wonderful qualities, they have had a difficult time finding adoptive homes--and sadly they may never find them. Some have medical needs, some are unrideable, some need special care, but whatever their story is, they all have one thing in common: they need the loving support of someone like you. Your gifts of money to help defray the costs of vet care, medicines, supplements, feed, farrier bills, etc. and/or donations of supplies can make a huge difference to these long-term residents of ASAP farm. Please consider sponsoring a horse or making a donation today.

If you would like to send money to help one of these special horses, please make a donation now - also make sure to email asapinc@mwt.net indicating which horse you want to receive your donation. Thanks!
Arne (8yr)

Update (10/4): Arne has a buddy! Arne wants to joyously report that: " A four year old boy from California has committed to helping me by sponsoring me for the next six months. We are anxious to start communicating with each other through pictures and letters. $30 a month will pay for a half a bale of good hay for me to eat.....I am so grateful that this boy cared so much for me that he picked me to love and care for! Look for updates in the next couple of weeks as we share pictures and letters with all of you too!"
Loved, Arne

Bay gelding - won $50,000 as a pacer - retired in 2000. Arne is an UNBELIEVABLY HANDSOME 17 hands high. His left hind leg has a calcified and enlarged hock and though he is trained to saddle, he's mainly a companion horse. Sweet as sugar! Arne is just a big sweet TEDDY BEAR!
Bob Cook (8yr)

Bob will go STRAIGHT TO YOUR HEART once you meet this GENTLEMAN. He is a Standardbred gelding and he loves people--especially children! Bob Cook - foaled in 1995 at Cottonwood Farms in Big Rock, IL. Sire: Silky Stallone out of No Nukes. Dam: Racy Kathy out of Tarport Kathy. Last race was at Maywood Park on January 12, 2001. He made $118,917 from 85 races. Unfortunately, Bob Cook did not leave his racing career in sound condition. He is currently in need of bute daily for a front leg in order for him to even use it to walk. He is a BIG TALL gelding with a BIG heart to match. He needs you to become his new adopter and help him recover. ASAP cannot afford to give Bob Cook all he needs for rehabilitation. We are offering him at NO CHARGE for adoption fee, but we are asking that his hauling fee be reimbursed to the shipper. Bob Cook is at the ASAP farm with the sanctuary horses.

Haiaku

UPDATE: Haiaku passed away after many good years at ASAP. We will miss him!
Haiaku (which means "go fast" in Japanese) raced at many places in the Midwest, but one day eight years ago, the odds were against him. Haiaku fractured his rear hock during a race, and was seen by a veterinarian, who recommended treatment. The cost of treatment may have been too great for the owner, but for whatever reason, they opted to turn him out to pasture without surgery.

Three years later, he was placed into our program by his owner, who didn't have the heart to euthanize him. Haiaku uses his rear leg as a kind of stilt, and unbelievably, moves around on all four legs. Sometimes he even canters awkwardly. He is best friends with Precious KC, below. He nickers to A.S.A.P. staff when they come outside each day, and loves his grain. Haiaku has been impossible to place, due to the severity of the hock fracture, and the deformity of his leg draws overwhelming sympathy from those who come to the farm. Haiaku needs ongoing contributions to maintain his level of care. Veterinary care and supplements are top priority.

Precious KC

In past weeks, we had some grave concerns about this mare. She was thin and appeared extremely lame. The report was that she has stifle problems, and has had them for a year, since she last raced. Precious also has a thyroid condition requiring medication and special feed with Weight Builder to try and get her up to a normal weight. Anticipated time needed at ASAP farm: at least six months. She can walk, trot, and canter when she gets the gumption. She is easy to be around on the ground, but look out at graining time!! She needs a loving family to foster her - or a place to live out her days as a companion horse. This horse earned $90,000 - we owe her our honor!! Ongoing needs include thyroid medication (provided by the charity) and occasional bute. She also needs weight builder supplements.
