Superbowl Joe

AKA "Pez" (barn name)

Pez has calmed down a great deal & is broke to saddle, but he needs to work on his cues and bending. He is a good boy though. He has even calmed down with his other pasturemates (he is getting along much better with the other geldings). He has become much more sweet and personable, coming up to people now in the pasture.

Jackson

Jackson is 7 1/2 years old. He is a beautiful Saddlebred. Approximately 16 hands tall. He is a very curious horse that is the first one that comes up to you when you call. He dances a little for the farrier but that is his personality. He loads easy and is an easy keeper. He can be a little pushy. He has been on many trail rides and overnight camping trips. He likes to ride. He is good on trails. When he doesn't know what something is he will stand by it or watch it and will go through it or by it. He does need an intermediate rider. He has a lot of energy. He plays hard sometimes with people, he sometimes will play but can bite as a part of his play. He is a fun horse with a lot of personality. He was in the middle of our herd. JB

22 year od Mare, she was raced. She is between 15 and 16 hands, bay with a white face. She is very malnourished right now and is pretty quiet unless you take her away from other horses. I do not think she has ever been ridden or could be at this point. She really just needs a loving home where she could be spoiled to make up for the suffering she has endured. Because of her condition, she does need a stall or shelter and blanket for the Winter. She is very sweet with people but I think can be a bit dominant with other horses.

11 year old out of Cole Muffler. Born at Cottonwood in Illinois- raced all over the nation, winnings of over $300,000. This horse has a heart of gold and that is why his current owner is seeking a good retirement for him. Located in Illinois. He does have arthritic in his front left ankle, he would make a light riding horse and a great friend. . Chevy Silverado was retired due to a sore ankle but is sound in the pasture at the walk trot and canter. He is nervous when transitioning and does not like to be alone - does best with a pasture buddy.Contact ASAP for more information at 608-689-2399, or by email asapinc@mwt.

Well thanks to our volunteer, Amy (a high school student who loves to ride), we were able to saddle up and Amy rode Chevie on Saturday. Chevie is such a sweet horse. He stands rock solid when you go to put the saddle on - won't twitch a muscle. He is so very smart. Amy got on him in the small turnout first, with no issue. She then took him to the indoor arena and the round pen and he did well. He was calling out for his mares, of course, but still was obedient. She was last riding him in the large turnout area (about one acre) and he had the most stunning run-walk I have seen since Star Cheetah was here! It was beautiful to watch and, Amy reports, wonderful to ride! We are hoping now that he is going to have some time under saddle that he will find a home soon. Susan

Missile Mike

(from foster home) He's pretty good on it but Dondi warned us that no one over 150 lbs should ride him. My farrier echoed that too, it would put too much stress on it. We have his brace that goes on it. He also hasn't been ridden. He much more confident with women to men and he absolutely loves kids. If he sees children he will walk right to the fence and put his head over for them to pet him. He came right up to a very autistic boy that came for therapy riding 2 weeks ago.

back in program. Currently in Illinois

Jumbo Shrimp

Hi everybody!!! My registered name is Jumbo Shrimp, but since that's kind of a funny name for a horse, you can call me Bella (or Shrimpy!) I am a brown/black bay Standardbred, and I'm a 23-year-old grandma. I stand at 15.3 hands, so I'm pretty tall for a grandma!!! I was born in New Jersey (I wonder how I wound up in Wisconsin!) ~ my dad was Direct Scooter and my mom was Gotta Headache. I raced as a pacer during 1989-1993, and had lifetime winnings of $48,638. I have had 10 registered Standardbred foals, of which 9 were raced. My babies have had total winnings of $565,557. I'm so proud of them! When I turned the grand age of 20, I got to be a pasture pet and have been used very lightly on trails. My original person had some financial and divorce difficulties, and so I came to be part of the ASAP program. I now live with my foster person near Baraboo, WI. I am a sweet old gal and I'm hoping I can find a family who will let me continue to be a pasture pet, or maybe even your best friend. I can be ridden lightly, but please don't make me work too hard ~ it wouldn't be good for me to be ridden extensively. Since I'm a grandma, I would like to be fed separately from other horses if they get too bossy with me, and I would like to have senior horse feed. My foster person thinks I might need some supplements for arthritis, but she is not sure since this is my first winter with her. I was really happy when I got a good hoof trim, and I don't have any signs of lameness. In the summertime, please make sure I have shade to stand or lay under.

Tender Tidbit: I feel that I have had a very honorable career, and I would love to have a human companion to call my very own ~ someone to love me and spoil me in my golden years. I have a lot of love to give back, too. Guess what ~ my adoption fee will be waived, if the right person finds me and wants to love me!!! That's pretty neat!!! I hope there is someone out there who will come to see me and want to take me home!!! :)

He is an easy keeper, loads, does well for farrier.

Betty's Nightmare

Hello!!! My name is Betty's Nightmare! I know, I know ~ that's kind of a silly name, but everyone calls me Betty, and I'm really not a Nightmare at all!! I am a 3rd dam to Night's Dream, and that's how I got this name. I'm 15 years young, and also about 15 hands high. I am a black mare, and quite pretty, if I do say so myself! When I was young I was a pacer and I lived with Larry Goins in Indiana. I have lived with my foster person for many years, but sadly she has developed some bad allergies and asthma, and I need to find a different home. I haven't been ridden very much, but I have let children be led around on my back. I don't like to go into the woods, though ~ it seems like such a scary place! I am broke to drive, because of my background. Sometimes I am really sensitive and am not sure about being touched, but when I'm in a happy mood I love to have attention. I do know my commands, and when my person spends time with me I am very well-behaved. I need to have a person who will understand my moods and be patient with me. A couple of years ago I had some problems with one of my hooves. My person was very good about treating me and having a farrier work with me. It took a long time, but my hoof is getting better now and only needs more growing out under the nail. At least I am no longer lame! I am really good with the farrier and see him on a regular basis. Last fall my pasture buddy found a new home and I am lonely without her, and sometimes sad. I would love to have a person of my own who would love me and work with me and bring out the best in me. Is there anybody out there who would like to take me home? It would make me so happy!!

Tender Tidbit: Even though I might sometimes appear to be aloof, I am really just sad without my buddy. When my foster person comes out to see me, she always calls to me "Hello Miss Betty" and I give her a big purr in response. So you see, I really do know my name and I want to have a person I can call my own. My adoption fee is only $100. Thanks for reading about me and I hope I will find a new forever home real soon!!!

Wildfire (3yr)

Filly. Pony. 8.3HH. White with brown speckles. Wildfire is halter broke and has a nice trot. She would be a great little cart pony. Current owner states, "She has a lovely, animated trot - a flashy pony once rid of her winter coat - she is white with brown "Arabian speckles" and large expressive eyes. Wildfire was WILD when she came and is wary of strangers but surprised me by bumping me lightly with her nose the other day - asking for a treat - so she is learning to trust despite not getting a lot of attention. She has a condition which the vet couldn't diagnose with the equipment he has. We are guessing it might be something like cleft palate in humans. We considered taking her to Madison to have her scoped to confirm or deny that - but since she is in good health and thriving - decided not to put her through the stress. She does best on dry feed - such as hay - and is an "easy keeper" as long as she has plenty of fresh water and some hay. She can eat grass, though it causes green discharge to run from her nose and in turn colors her coat green anywhere she touches herself with her muzzle. When she is fed hay that doesn't happen. Her feet are good and her attitude is curious and alert. She doesn't bully other animals. It is a shame that a young animal with her "weather vane horse" trot should spend her days loafing around the pasture. It would be wonderful if there was someone out there - perhaps someone who loves horses but is no longer able to ride or interested in riding, who has the experience and the time to teach this little lady to pull a small cart. As frightened as she was when she came flying out of the trailer on the first day she was here, and as horrified as she was about the process of washing off all the layers of mud, dirt and manure that first couple of days (not a big fan of bathing) she has never kicked or bitten. A little hay, a lot of fresh clean water to wash it down, some minerals and routine health care have kept her healthy here. I don't foresee her condition getting worse - she has seemed to thrive on the diet she is eating - but I couldn't guarantee that she would never have a problem." Please call for more details on Wildfire.

Depth Charge (19yr)
STB gelding. Sire:  Outstanding, Dam:  Helen of Highland. Bay - originally from Michigan - raced until late 90's. Has been in adoptive home since 1999 - is well trained to ride. Depth Charge hates cattle and should be in a home without cattle.  He has not seen another horse since 1999.  Is located in Westby, WI.  Contact ASAP for more.

Zeus (4yr)

Thoroughbred gelding. One of two horses that were rescued by a woman in Minnesota. She says this about Zeus, "He is sound for pleasure riding only. He is young, but not spooky at all and fairly well broke. Zeus actually has a crooked hind leg, which causes him to bear weight funny. When he was in training, both of his hocks filled with fluid and he did this funny skipping thing. At the moment his legs look really good as he has been in the pasture since July." UPDATE (10/15): I had the vet out and he examined Zeus. Here is his assessment.  He at one time was either born with, or later broke his right rear hock.  He suspects it was broken.  It is healed now.  I told him he runs jumps bucks etc . But it is a worry about him falling at any gait. A friend is here at the farm who rides and he thought about getting up on him bareback but he is just too tall.  Update from foster family (1/4/06): "He is such a cutie. Very tall, at least 17.2 (a BIG boy) and quite an exceptional horse. He is a beautiful mover. He has been ridden and he did fine, pretty green but not nutsy under saddle. However, we stopped riding him because of the way he carries his hock when under saddle. His left hock begins to bow out, quite odd looking, and looks like it is about to collapse." Update (3/20/06): Zeus continues to gain weight and do well in his current foster situation. Although he has never been at the ASAP farm, what Mary has done with Zeus is commendable. He is still in Minnesota and gets around well and looks healthy. He is waiting for the right companion home as a pasture pal - there is a possibility he could be a light riding horse but vet recommendation is necessary to determine this. Special thanks to Emily his placing owner who has been following his progress as well as to Mary S. in Hampton Minnesota for her dedication and hard work with Zeus.

Brandy

Current owner states, "Brandy's lameness is really only apparent when the ground is frozen. the vet out to look at her and she has some arthritis above her hooves in the front. On days where it is rough out, her lameness if definitely apparent but on days where there is snow to walk on or the ground is not frozen, then she is fine. For those reasons, we think shoes and pads might just be the answer for the cold months. The vet said the rest of her joints are all in really good shape so this seems like something that can be corrected or worked with. I also have her on Cortaflex too which helps. It is something that will need to be addressed but it is no way makes her useless. She just has days where she is sore. The vet did not say to restrict her action or anything like that. Hope that is a better explanation. I also have the write up the vet did 2 weeks ago for anyone who wants it." UPDATE (5/22): Brandy continues to thrive with the day campers who come to the ASAP farm.  She is walking better than ever now, without shoes.  She is aided by a wonderful farrier who believes in natural hoof trimming and has helped her to the point where she no longer needs shoes.  She is happy and the pinned ears and open mouth have all but disappeared.  We are proud to say Brandy is very happy at ASAP but the right person could win her over - come and see if you are the one!  Brandy is being ridden on a regular basis with a hackamore and goes both bareback and under Western saddle.  She has never offered to buck, rear, or do anything and is a perfect riding horse

Arne (8yr)

light riding horse and/or companion horse

Update (10/12): When Arne's little buddy, Bennie, opened the first card with a note from and photo of Arne, he kissed it and carried around all day! Update (10/4): Arne has a buddy! Arne wants to joyously report that: " A four year old boy from California has committed to helping me by sponsoring me for the next six months. We are anxious to start communicating with each other through pictures and letters. $30 a month will pay for a half a bale of good hay for me to eat.....I am so grateful that this boy cared so much for me that he picked me to love and care for! Look for updates in the next couple of weeks as we share pictures and letters with all of you too!" Loved, Arne. Bay gelding - won $50,000 as a pacer - retired in 2000. Arne is an UNBELIEVABLY HANDSOME 17 hands high. His left hind leg has a calcified and enlarged hock and though he is trained to saddle, he's mainly a companion horse. Sweet as sugar! Arne is just a big sweet TEDDY BEAR!
