Emaline

-8yr STB mare 16HH trail sound, shown, pretty Odds On Tom--11yr STB gelding 16+HH trail sound, BIG BABY both in IA URGENTLY NEEDED MOVED

Dove

9yo, 16HH, sound, she's the lead horse, the boss. She stands find for farrier, loads and hauls fine. She does well with my kids when i'm leading her. The only issue is when i ride her solo, she sometimes thinks she is deciding where and how fast we go. She likes to trot, I prefer walking most of the time. :) When we trail rode with her, she got very annoyed when she was asked follow, and tried to pass my husband's horse. When she was in the lead or even with the other horse she was fine.

Shady

3yo, approx 16HH, maybe 15.3. He's got a sweet dispostion, stands for the farrier no problem. We haven't really worked with him, short of leading him around. I think he would do well, he's pretty laid back.

Z Tempest

23yr Arabian mare white no vices, 14.2HH, very loving, light riding, blind in left eye...NEEDS MOVED URGENTLY!! located in Palmyra, WI

Lil Bit Hypey & Ginger

Jumbo Shrimp

Hi everybody!!! My registered name is Jumbo Shrimp, but since that's kind of a funny name for a horse, you can call me Bella (or Shrimpy!) I am a brown/black bay Standardbred, and I'm a 23-year-old grandma. I stand at 15.3 hands, so I'm pretty tall for a grandma!!! I was born in New Jersey (I wonder how I wound up in Wisconsin!) ~ my dad was Direct Scooter and my mom was Gotta Headache. I raced as a pacer during 1989-1993, and had lifetime winnings of $48,638. I have had 10 registered Standardbred foals, of which 9 were raced. My babies have had total winnings of $565,557. I'm so proud of them! When I turned the grand age of 20, I got to be a pasture pet and have been used very lightly on trails. My original person had some financial and divorce difficulties, and so I came to be part of the ASAP program. I now live with my foster person near Baraboo, WI. I am a sweet old gal and I'm hoping I can find a family who will let me continue to be a pasture pet, or maybe even your best friend. I can be ridden lightly, but please don't make me work too hard ~ it wouldn't be good for me to be ridden extensively. Since I'm a grandma, I would like to be fed separately from other horses if they get too bossy with me, and I would like to have senior horse feed. My foster person thinks I might need some supplements for arthritis, but she is not sure since this is my first winter with her. I was really happy when I got a good hoof trim, and I don't have any signs of lameness. In the summertime, please make sure I have shade to stand or lay under.

Tender Tidbit: I feel that I have had a very honorable career, and I would love to have a human companion to call my very own ~ someone to love me and spoil me in my golden years. I have a lot of love to give back, too. Guess what ~ my adoption fee will be waived, if the right person finds me and wants to love me!!! That's pretty neat!!! I hope there is someone out there who will come to see me and want to take me home!!! :)

Nikki

Compass

7 years old Warmblood/Thoroughbred. His dam is a Swedish approve= mare. His sire is an RSPI/Oldenburg/ISR/AWS approved Thoroughbred= He has incredible bloodlines, phenomenal movement and has a great personality. He leads, loads, ties, bathes, ground drives, lunges, trailers, clips...he does it all. He's turned out 24/7 with mares and geldings...an easy keeper...no shoes. He has not been ridden since November 2007 and will need a completerestart.

KOKINOS

Hi friends ~ I would like to tell you a little about myself! My name is Kokinos..... that's my registered name and also the name I go by ~ so that's easy to remember!!! I am a 6-year-old Standardbred gelding about 15.1 hands, and I've heard people say that I am a gooooorgeous red color ~ in fact, my name is a Greek word which means "red", so that gives you an idea of how pretty I am! :) Just like many of the Standardbreds in this program, I was supposed to be a racehorse, but it didn't quite work out the way my original person hoped. I hurt my leg one time, and because of that I was retired. I have a funny bump on one of my front feet, but the vet said it doesn't hurt me and won't affect my health. I have a slight toe-in on that foot, but I think that makes me look even more cute than I already am :). I have a very laid-back personality, and I can be a little timid and submissive. Sometimes I can be a worrier, but I am also very very obedient! I hate to be alone and prefer being with friends ~ either 2-legged or 4-legged ~ especially if they are quiet like me. I might need a little extra time to warm up to you because I really need security ~ so please be patient with me. I haven't had anyone ride me yet, but I do know how to drive. It's probably a good idea to have a vet determine whether or not I can be saddle-broke ~~ but I would love to pull a cart for you! My foster person has done some ground work with me in a round pen, and I'm a good learner.

Tender Tidbit: Since I have a reputation for being so timid and worried, it is a very special thing when I go up to my foster person unannounced and ask her for some attention or treats :). I am currently living in SE Wisconsin, and guess what ~ if you would like to take me home and be your forever friend, Susan says that donations are accepted at your discretion. So won't you please consider me??? Thanks! :)

Betty's Nightmare

Hello!!! My name is Betty's Nightmare! I know, I know ~ that's kind of a silly name, but everyone calls me Betty, and I'm really not a Nightmare at all!! I am a 3rd dam to Night's Dream, and that's how I got this name. I'm 15 years young, and also about 15 hands high. I am a black mare, and quite pretty, if I do say so myself! When I was young I was a pacer and I lived with Larry Goins in Indiana. I have lived with my foster person for many years, but sadly she has developed some bad allergies and asthma, and I need to find a different home. I haven't been ridden very much, but I have let children be led around on my back. I don't like to go into the woods, though ~ it seems like such a scary place! I am broke to drive, because of my background. Sometimes I am really sensitive and am not sure about being touched, but when I'm in a happy mood I love to have attention. I do know my commands, and when my person spends time with me I am very well-behaved. I need to have a person who will understand my moods and be patient with me. A couple of years ago I had some problems with one of my hooves. My person was very good about treating me and having a farrier work with me. It took a long time, but my hoof is getting better now and only needs more growing out under the nail. At least I am no longer lame! I am really good with the farrier and see him on a regular basis. Last fall my pasture buddy found a new home and I am lonely without her, and sometimes sad. I would love to have a person of my own who would love me and work with me and bring out the best in me. Is there anybody out there who would like to take me home? It would make me so happy!!

Tender Tidbit: Even though I might sometimes appear to be aloof, I am really just sad without my buddy. When my foster person comes out to see me, she always calls to me "Hello Miss Betty" and I give her a big purr in response. So you see, I really do know my name and I want to have a person I can call my own. My adoption fee is only $100. Thanks for reading about me and I hope I will find a new forever home real soon!!!

Lyric

10 years old - 15'3 hands tall - beautiful gray with black points in her mane and tail. Lyric requires a bit more in terms of gaining respect for a person on the ground. She is confident and sweet, yet wants what she wants and doesn't hesitate to push past you to get it. Has been a trail horse. She can be dominant but not hurtful in her dominance with other horses. Lyric is in need of a good hoof trimming but is otherwise sound. She is gaining weight nicely on her current diet and is due to be de-wormed this week. Lyric needs a more assertive, confident rider to help her "mind".

Royal Swan Song "Swanee"

Royal Swan Song "Swanee" is an 11 year old, 17 hand Standardbred bay gelding who has been in the same adoptive home since 2000. He has four white socks and a star on his forehead. He is very gentle and eager to please. He has been ridden hunt seat in an arena and does well with extended gaits and a posting rider. He has also been ridden Western. His main job has been trail riding, which he seems to enjoy very much. He is good with all types of motor vehicles, as he is ridden a mile down a state highway to get to the trails often. He is good with the vet and farrier, and trailers well. He began having allergies which caused some respiratory difficulties in mid summer 2007. Crash

Update on Crash

8-2008

Update from where Crash is located

Crash is an 11 years old Appaloosa gelding. He stands at 15HH.

He adores people and is so forgiving(I accidently walked him into a large wooden post recently-he stopped, backed up a step and looked at me and sighed... he's such a character-if he trusts you he will do anything-even if he can't see it! I've had him through deep rivers, over 2'6" jumps, on trails on the edge of large dropoffs... he's so brave! He love's to learn too... if Im not trail riding I am practicing dressage prinicpals- he learned to be "on the bit" and to change his trot extensions so amazingly quickly. I would still recomend someone who is either a very logical begineer (he needs clear and concise communication) althogh he's very forgiving, or else some one with more experience. I hope he can find someone who will appreciate all his quirks("why would I want a carrot, when I can have hay?") his forgiveness, and his willingness to please you, if you are methodical and logical and work to build his trust. He's always the first one to come if you call his name!

He's the first one to greet you, will come running when you call his name, and likes being around people, and is very curious. He stands nicely for the ferrier, and is easy to trailer. His hooves are very dry and are prone to cracks which get better with supplements(biotin) and hoof moisturizer, and regular ferrier visits, in the summer every 6-7 weeks, and in the winter every 8-9 weeks. I've had crash for 4 years now, prior to me, crash had 2 months of professional training. Crash has been ridden in an arena, learning basic dressage(which he has learned very quickly), on trail rides through creeks and rough terrain, and has been trailered. Crash is partially blind, and because of this, needs to go somewhere with clearly marked fences, he has had injuries in the past from running into new fences(especially where the fence line is confusing) and has several scars, but no lasting damage. He is also very reliant on having a buddy that he can stick with and follow if he's unsure of the fences. He would be a good match to someone who is willing to be patient with him and not to overwhelm him with too many instructions at once, building his trust by slowly introducing new ideas and obstacles to him. He can be a wonderful trail riding companion, and loves to learn! He doesn't respond to "just kick him harder, and he'll go" mentality, if he refuses to go, its because he is unsure where to go and if its safe or not, but once he trusts you, he'll happily forge small rivers, and even go over small jumps. With a sensitive rider, and he will shine! He's naturally curious seems to enjoy going riding. This picture was taken mid October of this year! In foster care in Milwaukee

KINGFISH ELMHURST

Comet (10yr)

Wildfire (3yr)

Filly. Pony. 8.3HH. White with brown speckles. Wildfire is halter broke and has a nice trot. She would be a great little cart pony. Current owner states, "She has a lovely, animated trot - a flashy pony once rid of her winter coat - she is white with brown "Arabian speckles" and large expressive eyes. Wildfire was WILD when she came and is wary of strangers but surprised me by bumping me lightly with her nose the other day - asking for a treat - so she is learning to trust despite not getting a lot of attention. She has a condition which the vet couldn't diagnose with the equipment he has. We are guessing it might be something like cleft palate in humans. We considered taking her to Madison to have her scoped to confirm or deny that - but since she is in good health and thriving - decided not to put her through the stress. She does best on dry feed - such as hay - and is an "easy keeper" as long as she has plenty of fresh water and some hay. She can eat grass, though it causes green discharge to run from her nose and in turn colors her coat green anywhere she touches herself with her muzzle. When she is fed hay that doesn't happen. Her feet are good and her attitude is curious and alert. She doesn't bully other animals. It is a shame that a young animal with her "weather vane horse" trot should spend her days loafing around the pasture. It would be wonderful if there was someone out there - perhaps someone who loves horses but is no longer able to ride or interested in riding, who has the experience and the time to teach this little lady to pull a small cart. As frightened as she was when she came flying out of the trailer on the first day she was here, and as horrified as she was about the process of washing off all the layers of mud, dirt and manure that first couple of days (not a big fan of bathing) she has never kicked or bitten. A little hay, a lot of fresh clean water to wash it down, some minerals and routine health care have kept her healthy here. I don't foresee her condition getting worse - she has seemed to thrive on the diet she is eating - but I couldn't guarantee that she would never have a problem." Please call for more details on Wildfire.

Depth Charge (19yr)
STB gelding. Sire:  Outstanding, Dam:  Helen of Highland. Bay - originally from Michigan - raced until late 90's. Has been in adoptive home since 1999 - is well trained to ride. Depth Charge hates cattle and should be in a home without cattle.  He has not seen another horse since 1999.  Is located in Westby, WI.  Contact ASAP for more.

Zeus (4yr)

Thoroughbred gelding. One of two horses that were rescued by a woman in Minnesota. She says this about Zeus, "He is sound for pleasure riding only. He is young, but not spooky at all and fairly well broke. Zeus actually has a crooked hind leg, which causes him to bear weight funny. When he was in training, both of his hocks filled with fluid and he did this funny skipping thing. At the moment his legs look really good as he has been in the pasture since July." UPDATE (10/15): I had the vet out and he examined Zeus. Here is his assessment.  He at one time was either born with, or later broke his right rear hock.  He suspects it was broken.  It is healed now.  I told him he runs jumps bucks etc . But it is a worry about him falling at any gait. A friend is here at the farm who rides and he thought about getting up on him bareback but he is just too tall.  Update from foster family (1/4/06): "He is such a cutie. Very tall, at least 17.2 (a BIG boy) and quite an exceptional horse. He is a beautiful mover. He has been ridden and he did fine, pretty green but not nutsy under saddle. However, we stopped riding him because of the way he carries his hock when under saddle. His left hock begins to bow out, quite odd looking, and looks like it is about to collapse." Update (3/20/06): Zeus continues to gain weight and do well in his current foster situation. Although he has never been at the ASAP farm, what Mary has done with Zeus is commendable. He is still in Minnesota and gets around well and looks healthy. He is waiting for the right companion home as a pasture pal - there is a possibility he could be a light riding horse but vet recommendation is necessary to determine this. Special thanks to Emily his placing owner who has been following his progress as well as to Mary S. in Hampton Minnesota for her dedication and hard work with Zeus.

Brandy

Current owner states, "Brandy's lameness is really only apparent when the ground is frozen. the vet out to look at her and she has some arthritis above her hooves in the front. On days where it is rough out, her lameness if definitely apparent but on days where there is snow to walk on or the ground is not frozen, then she is fine. For those reasons, we think shoes and pads might just be the answer for the cold months. The vet said the rest of her joints are all in really good shape so this seems like something that can be corrected or worked with. I also have her on Cortaflex too which helps. It is something that will need to be addressed but it is no way makes her useless. She just has days where she is sore. The vet did not say to restrict her action or anything like that. Hope that is a better explanation. I also have the write up the vet did 2 weeks ago for anyone who wants it." UPDATE (5/22): Brandy continues to thrive with the day campers who come to the ASAP farm.  She is walking better than ever now, without shoes.  She is aided by a wonderful farrier who believes in natural hoof trimming and has helped her to the point where she no longer needs shoes.  She is happy and the pinned ears and open mouth have all but disappeared.  We are proud to say Brandy is very happy at ASAP but the right person could win her over - come and see if you are the one!  Brandy is being ridden on a regular basis with a hackamore and goes both bareback and under Western saddle.  She has never offered to buck, rear, or do anything and is a perfect riding horse

Arne (8yr)

light riding horse and/or companion horse

Update (10/12): When Arne's little buddy, Bennie, opened the first card with a note from and photo of Arne, he kissed it and carried around all day! Update (10/4): Arne has a buddy! Arne wants to joyously report that: " A four year old boy from California has committed to helping me by sponsoring me for the next six months. We are anxious to start communicating with each other through pictures and letters. $30 a month will pay for a half a bale of good hay for me to eat.....I am so grateful that this boy cared so much for me that he picked me to love and care for! Look for updates in the next couple of weeks as we share pictures and letters with all of you too!" Loved, Arne. Bay gelding - won $50,000 as a pacer - retired in 2000. Arne is an UNBELIEVABLY HANDSOME 17 hands high. His left hind leg has a calcified and enlarged hock and though he is trained to saddle, he's mainly a companion horse. Sweet as sugar! Arne is just a big sweet TEDDY BEAR!
