Youth
day camps are in full swing at the ASAP Farm
A slow start to
our Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday open day camps only lasted two
weeks before word spread - and as of this week we have five students
participating at different levels of horsemanship skills. The
students all have special needs, and volunteers include peer tutors
from the same school or surrounding districts who love horses,
have experience, and enjoy the opportunity to share their love
of horses with others.
Wednesday nights are Gymkhana nights and this week will be our
first week with several students participating. Watch for pictures
on the web site very soon!
The
miniature horses out at the farm lately will enable students who
are more apprehensive about working with Standardbreds because
of their size to learn the same types of skills needed for handling
larger horses.
Niatrick, Janimal, Asha and Chief are the main schooling horses
we will use this month. Niatrick, although all of 17 hands, is
personable and friendly and safe. Janimal, more spunky and spirited,
will be used with the more experienced day campers. Chief, also
tall, is as gentle as he is big, and will be a good beginner horse
for anyone. Asha is quite the gaming competitor and has been taking
some students around cones and is destined for the poles and barrels
this week with Heather if all works out as anticipated. Let's
hope for cooler weather!
