We can't say enough good things about Regina and Jim from Nebraska. They have rescued many horses in the past, but they deserve a special thank you for rescuing Annie, below.

In just one day her feet were trimmed and went from this...

...to this...

They report Annie is a sweetheart and is recovering quickly. Fantastic work, Regina and Jim!

Thanks for checking in!

SPECIAL UPDATE FROM SUSAN...

Go For It Granny, the three year old Thoroughbred that came into ASAP's care in January, was rushed to Great Lakes Vet Clinic yesterday for emergency treatment. She appeared to be losing large amounts of weight despite the good care and intensive vet visits despite the three way wormer and the careful diet. When Amy woke up and went outside yesterday morning, she was greeted by a very weak Granny, who let out a pathetic whinny as a plea for help. It appeared that she had just dropped weight, even during the night, and Amy knew she must act quickly. With the help of a friend, they were able to load Granny and take her to the vet clinic in Neenah. She was put on IV and a catheter was also inserted. Blood work has been done round the clock. Internal parasites running rampant inside of Granny are suspected at this point of robbing her of all nutrients. She also had an impaction that, once removed, was covered with eggs. The next thing to rule out is liver failure due to parasites. So far Granny is responding well to treatment. Tomorrow we should learn how her liver is functioning. As of today the vet bill is $600, but the vet has graciously donated $300 worth of services. If you can help us, please send a donation of any amount to:

Now we know that Sabre's Sweetheart's demise must have been the result of internal parasites and, most likely, liver failure. So far Last Name First is thriving and responding well to care. Thank you for your prayers and support!

ANOTHER WEEK GONE!

I got inside after doing chores last night and was surprised that it was only 6:50! Wow - usually I don't get in until at least 8:00 and then have kids to get ready for bed and cats and dogs and birds to tuck in with snacks or "treats" before I can get to the computer. Last night was a nice surprise to have that extra time.

Lots going on, but then again that isn't a surprise to anyone, is it? I am sad to say that one of our best adopters of all time who has provided a loving home to three of our horses contacted me this week with devastating news: her husband has lung cancer. She must disperse the two horses she has from ASAP, and is also donating two horses that she has rescued in the past from the kill buyers. One is a nice little Pintabian who had a bowed tendon when she got him, but the vet has cleared him for riding this spring and he will make a great little horse for someone. The other, a Quarter horse, is a friendly fellow who is a little barn sour - he'll go to our trainer Ray Waters for some "fine tuning" before we offer him for adoption. Please be in prayer for this family as they begin radiation and chemotherapy treatments on Monday. Seems many of us are experiencing such huge trials right now in our lives - and yet God has promised us that He will never give us more than we can handle as long as our eyes are on Him. I can only hope that, if a trial this big ever comes my way, that I can handle it - I cannot imagine.

We got another sanctuary horse on the farm. He was being cared for by Sunburst Farms for the past few months, and now is at ASAP. He is a very tall and handsome fellow named Arne. When he first came to us several years ago he was in need of intensive rehabilitation. He was thin, and was in poor condition. His back leg looked as if it were completely blown out! A wonderful woman and fellow teacher took Arne after some time with ASAP and loved him and even rode him lightly. She had to return Arne for personal reasons (more of life's trials)...............so now Arne is looking for that special someone who will pamper him and use him lightly. His leg looks great now, and he does not limp, but he did limp on the first day he came to the farm after the trailer ride. Bute seems to take the soreness away, so we give him that as needed.

Special thanks to Weenonah for her generous donation of $100 this past week. Weenonah adopted Barb's Legacy and Shine of Hollywood, and reports that Shine is the BEST riding horse! Even her grandkids can ride him! Barb's Legacy will begin saddle training this spring. Weenonah has a heart for all horses, but for the rescues in particular. We appreciate that!
There was also donation of $15 from a Wisconsin family (much appreciated). A Minnesota rescue is closing its doors in a few weeks, and contacted ASAP to make a monetary contribution. Seems as though their program ran into a "lack of interest" problem - something we have never had with ASAP, thanks to all of you! It makes us so very thankful for the strength in numbers of supporters of ASAP and the belief you all share with us for the good of the horses. I think the donation they are making is substantial, and we are so grateful that they contacted us as the recipients. My heart also goes out to them for having to make the tough decision on whether or not to continue their endeavors. Minnesota horses will miss you!

Thank you also is in order to Dr. Diana Wilson for her donation of veterinary supplies - we continue to look to her as a source of reference and consultation for the tough cases we see..................and appreciate her support very much. Thanks to Adrienne Nelson for her Michigan support - she is passing out information at the race tracks on weekends on our behalf.
.......Don't let me forget Mary Dyroff, who recently adopted Friendly Explosion and Sis Herself, for her donation of 1,000 printed newsletters and the time she took to run them off, and for the doses of West Nile Virus vaccine waiting for us at the vet's office this spring. Mary is faithful in coming to the farm to see Expo and the other horses and we are very excited to have her as part of the ASAP family.

Illinois harness racing still at a stand still - we can only hope for a quick resolution - I am sure many pockets are empty at this point with so many horses that are not racing in other states. Nevertheless, we are getting ready for the Illinois State Fair and our chance to show off our horses along with ISOBA. That is next weekend!

April 4-6 you can see us at the Iowa State Fair demonstrating with the Iowa Harness Horseman's Association. The biggest gift we have received is their support of us by paying for our booth space and stalls, and LODGING!!!!!!! We are truly blessed.

Next you will see us at the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison. This has been a very stressful time as we attempt to work with another Standardbred group in arranging a demonstration. Unfortunately, this group is resisting a partnership effort in demonstrations, so we will be demonstrating apart from the harness racing group there. The good news is that we will have fifteen minute slots of time (just US) to strut our stuff and show off our Standardbreds! For further information about the difficulties we have faced with the other group, contact me directly.

We will not be able to afford the Minnesota Horse Expo this year, as it cost ASAP several hundred dollars each time we go up to St. Paul for the event. If any of you have any ideas how the expense can be covered, give me a call. The stall space alone was $300 last year, and that did not even include the motel and gas, etc. I am crushed because I really look forward to seeing Crystal Lyons each April in the coliseum................sigh.................

If any of you can wander over to the farm to help us get ready to take Janimal and Alternative to Springfield (bath, groom, clip) please know that I welcome your help! I also need help getting tack ready, and packing the trailer!

We are also seeking people to haul horses from Indiana to Wisconsin, and Michigan to Wisconsin. This MUST happen in the next week. You would be reimbursed. Contact me for further information.

I will be multi-tasking until I share news with you again.

Take care!
Susan
