Sassie Susie (7yr)

Thoroughbred mare. This horse was once an eventing horse, but she has "retired" from that level of competition. This seal brown/bay mare is 16.1 hands and has a beautiful head and conformation. Sassie is trained for Level 2 dressage. Owner states that someone who adopts her may want to continue doing dressage. However, her eventing and jumping days are over. She needs a very stoic, composed, quiet rider. She is happiest with this kind of rider and willingly does her dressage moves. She is also a good trail horse if she is not the lead horse in the groups. Current family reports this horse has gained weight and filled out since these photos. UPDATE (3/17): Foster family sends us this report: "Susie is a big girl. Nice looking, although she is pretty furry right now. She needs a competent rider, quiet and calm, as I don't think she would put up with a beginner. One experienced rider who rode Susie remarked it was the best ride she ever had in her life. She was a very good rider and competes in dressage. Susie was HAPPY being ridden by her. Susie was once for sale for $45,000 prior to being donated to ASAP. Because she probably shouldn't event any more, I think they were unable to sell her as an eventing horse. She is sound and well trained. She likes a quiet calm rider that gives her confidence. No beginners or agressive riders with this mare. I am quite fond of her and feel that she deserves an owner who will give her lots of attention. She loads but does not like being groomed. I have been working on that and we just had a session that she tolerated. I am sure that would go away if someone just stuck to it and she trusted them. When she came she was several hundred pounds under weight. She is in fine flesh now.She is an relatively easy keeper for a tb and probably needs her teeth floated. She is due for her spring vaccinations and has been on a regular worming program. She was just wormed for tapes. She stands fine for the farrier and is currently barefoot. I have not tried to clip her or pull her mane. I have never ridden her. I put her in a herm sprenger loose cheek snaffle when that woman rode her and Susie loved that bit."
Mr. Parker (aka Curious George)

Bay. History unknown but is broke to ride and drive. (Could be Mr. Parker aka Curious George.) This horse, along with two others, was dropped off at the ASAP farm anonymously. Please call the ASAP office for more details. Susan reports this horse is gentle, broke to ride, and is a trotter.
Handsome Benevolence (2yr)

Gelding. Owner reports, "He is 3/4 saddlebred and 1/4 arab, but not registered with the Nat. Show Registry - although he could be. He is registered with the Pinto Horse Association. I showed him as a weanling, he won some futurity money. I didn't work with him much at all last summer since I wasn't showing him. He ties, hauls, good about feet, loves grooming, comes when called. He should mature to 16.1 - 16.2 HH, bay & white pinto, mostly bay, tall white socks, flashy saddlebred trot, well muscled, never been ill, all vaccines current, farrier always trimmed every 8 weeks. He's sound, his first year of life he was on daily dewormer (Continuex) and vitamins (Grow Colt) our grain mix, Calf Manna and corn oil. He's getting 3/4 lb grain a day now that he's on second crop hay. He was gaining too much weight with both grain and good hay. He's got good solid hooves, and strong bones, good teeth. He's really quite attractive and flashy. His mama was a show horse and quite successful until she broke her ankle. His sire is Spotacular Fame, son of The Color of Fame - can't get much more famous than him! Handsome doesn't like clippers, and tolerates bathing. He would be very happy with someone who'd give him treats, attention and brushing until it comes time for him to be broke. He's a people oriented horse, absolutely not aggressive. He has never laid his ears back, nor kicked, but he's nippy. I put a lot of hours in him the first six months of his life, and he's lonely now."
Thank God For Granny (4yr)

Thoroughbred mare - bay. 16hh. Sound and saddle trained.
UPDATE (1/7): This Thoroughbred arrived at the ASAP farm after a year of foster care in Oshkosh, WI, where she was treated for a serious infestation of worms. Even though she was thin and sick one year ago, Granny has to be 16 hands, but her wither is still growing to catch up with her rump! She is the most AMAZING thoroughbred we have had at our place, and I am fully tempted to compare her with a Standardbred's temperament. She is every bit calm, wise, sensible, and loving as horse with years of experience, yet she is only going to be four. While dragging a water tank over to her pen last week, she simply watched, curious yet not reactive. That big tank clunked and scraped across the icy driveway, and when I got it over to her pen I managed enough strength to WHIRL it over the top 5' panel and it landed BANG right next to her. She simply looked at it without moving, and then stuck her nose in it to explore. How does that sound for a quiet filly? I haven't ridden her yet, but given the right warm day with solid footing I am going to take her for a walk.......don't miss this great horse!
Sportsbar (5yr)

STB dark bay gelding from Springfield, Illinois. This five year old had some pinfiring done on a hind ankle awhile back. He is sound on this leg now and ready for a home. Nice head, perfect build, still growing a winter coat . He is about 15 hands tall and loves Francis G. We hope to find him a home before Francis leaves for his new home in Wyoming! UPDATE (1/21): Please someone adopt this light bay beauty. He wants to be someone's pet - won't leave us alone when we go down to the arena!!! UPDATE (2/9):He is the son of Tanglewood, the mare, and Sportsmaster, the sire (standing at Fox Valley - Walker Standardbreds). Sportsbar was an extremely expensive horse, and hopes were high. In 2003 he fractured a sesamoid and had chips removed and was rested for six months. They tried to return him to racing, but he kept coming up sore. The vet recommended (and trainer) that he be retired. He would be suitable for all types of riding except dressage and jumping. He is quite the athlete, and quite the handsome gelding. He is adjusting to being turned out with horses in a herd right now, and thinks he is king.
Zagnut (7yr)
STB gelding - roan with small star. Pacer - 16hh. This is beautiful horse. He is healthy, and has no vices. Zagnut came up sore on his front left and couldn't qualify at the track, so he's now up for adoption. He is now sound and ready for a new home. In Wisconsin. UPDATE (2/9): This little roan Standardbred gelding is sweet and gentle. He is not very big, and could use a few pounds, but he was a good race horse and will be a wonderful family horse. He is out of BROADWAY EXPRESS! Raced as a pacer, and now retired in time to give you years and years of companionship and riding pleasure. As of February 5, he is on his way to his foster home in De Kalb, Illinois - waiting for ride to ASAP farm.
Bo Knows Silky Too

Bay. Broke to ride. This horse has been identified as one of 14 rescued horses from a feed lot. He is broke to drive and perhaps ride. This horse, along with two others, was dropped off at the ASAP farm anonymously. Please call the ASAP office for more details.
Son of Greek A

STB gelding. This handsome bay looks quite a bit like Pete, only darker. He was also a willing and obedient race horse, and is about the same size as Pete. These two would get along well together in a home that is looking for geldings. "Greek" had a little more spirit passing the pigs and dogs, but when turned out his tail came straight in the air and he pranced and ran around the arena like a child who hadn't seen recess in days! He is a true sweetie. UPDATE (2/9): I cannot say enough about this gelding. He has the most refined bones and legs and a sweet demeanor. He would rather be with people than horses. Our hopes are to have him started under saddle in February. UPDATE (2/22): Director Susan Wellman had plenty of time to play with Son of Greek over the weekend. Since he had his feet trimmed last weekend and the farrier discovered an abscess, Greek has been resting up in Susan's barn. Susan had been giving him a gram of bute and watching him closely. Every time someone comes outside, Greek whinnies for them. He has the sweetest, most innocent face and eyes you could ever imagine. He just wants human companionship, even more than being with the other horses.
The pigs are now his friends and not something to be afraid of. In fact, there is nothing so far that Susan has seen that indicates he would be afraid of anything. If you lead him somewhere, he goes, whether it is in between and over and under any obstacle, if you go he will follow. There is not one bad habit that has been noted. A funny observation this past week was when Susan thought that Greek was sore on all four legs because at feeding time he would lift all of his legs as if in pain, rotating from one to the next. Isn't it interesting that this is only observed at feeding time? This past week it is confirmed that this is behavior and not soreness on Greek's part. He just gets anxious that someone will steal his feed!!!!! This horse is going to make someone a fantastic friend and riding companion. If someone doesn't grab him up soon, he will be added to Susan's herd!!!
Harvey Stewart (12yr)
STB trotter geldin. 15hh. Gray roan. This horse has been broke to drive and ride, but he's been a pasture ornament for quite a while and needs an experienced rider to get him back to his original training level. Please call for more information. UPDATE (2/9): This horse is out of ANXIOUS ROBBIE He was a trotter. He is registered as a roan but is silver/gray and was a great race horse. After retiring several years ago, Harvey was retrained to saddle and gave lessons to children. His owner died, and he was willed to a friend. Now, Harvey needs a place where he can continue to be ridden and enjoyed. He loves attention. He can be a bit headstrong, pulling on the lead line, but otherwise is a great horse. As of February 5, this horse is on his way to foster care in De Kalb, IL waiting for a lift to the ASAP farm. UPDATE (2/22): The potential adopter who went out to see Harvey Stewart in De Kalb on Sunday said that we had better get a picture of Zagnut on the site - once people see him, they will be wanting him. He is a beautiful roan, flashy, a very nice mover!!!! And, of course, a nice temperament to boot!
Tillys Last Filly (7yr)
Foaled 3/30/96. Bay (Looks black). Mare. Large Star, snip, right hind leg white. 15.2 hands. Race sound. Has knot on tendon from accident when she was in the field as a two year old. Trots VERY well. Would make an excellent show horse. Very lovable. Don't pet her or you will be doing it the rest of the day.
Pistol Pete N

STB gelding. Bred in Tazmania, trained and raced in New Zealand, Pete is a perfectly obedient and willing to please horse. Bell Valley Farm trainer reports that Pete and Son of Greek A both have the temperaments that are always cooperative and gentle. He would recommend them for families with kids, remembering that they still need their saddle training. Pete stood quietly while the other two horses loaded onto the trailer, and walked right on. Once at the ASAP farm, Pete unloaded and walked right past dogs and pot-bellied pigs without hesitation! He is around 15'1 hands. He had splints removed from a front leg and is recovered from his operation and ready for the saddle. Pistol Pete came to America three years ago to race - and cost American race horse owner $50,000 to purchase.
License to Dream (11yr)
STB mare. Bay. 14.2hh. This mare has never been raced nor ridden. She has been a broodmare who has had six foals. Sweet. Good with people. Dream needs a second life. Sound and up to date on all shots. Located in Ohio, 60 miles west of Toledo.

Francis G (3yr)

STB gelding trotter. Bay and 16hh.

Francis G. - A LOVE STORY
Francis was born to a loving, hopeful harness racing family just a couple of short years ago. He was sweet and loving, gentle and kind. He grew quickly, and a man from Wisconsin had high hopes for Francis to become a winning athlete. Then tragedy struck, and Francis had a horrible accident. He was found, to everyone's horror, with a skull fracture. We are told that the fracture was so intense that "his nose was back to his withers," so the man from Wisconsin did what any other loving, compassionate owner would do, and made the decision to rush him to Ohio State Vet Hospital. Francis spent four months in care at this hospital, and made a miraculous recovery, with love and time and good veterinary care. After $4,000 worth of bills, the only thing that Francis did differently was to cock his head from certain angles to look at things. It didn't involve his thinking - it didn't involve his sweet personality or gentle nature - he just has a little "tilt". With encouragement and hope, Erv Miller at the state fairgrounds in Illinois and Francis G.'s owner worked together with Francis to get Francis going again. The amazing thing was -- Francis never held his head funny when in harness -- it was and is straight and proud -- Francis won't be a racing champion, but his owner wants him to be loved by someone who will ride him and hug him and care for him as a pleasure horse. He will literally stand for hours and put his nose into your lap, and wants to follow people and be with people constantly - a good indication of all the proper attention he has had since he was born. Francis has no leg problems - he is sound. Won't someone give him a permanent home? He is one special horse!
